How does Wikiplanning help the environment?
We all know that any form of combustion engine based transportation adds to the release of GHG's (green house gasses), which are major contributors to Global Warming. Wikiplanning replaces in part or in whole, the need for public meetings, reducing the need for travel by all attendees.
What travel is eliminated?
Most citizens that attend public meetings arrive by automobile, as do the public officials and their staff that conduct these meetings. In many cases, design professionals and consultants involved in the planning process travel by airplane to participate in these meetings as well. Every public meeting eliminated through the use of Wikiplanning, eliminates these travel needs.
How else does Wikiplanning help?
For each public meeting held, reams of paper are printed and distributed to the attendees. Agendas, copies of plans, schedules of future meetings etc. contribute to the use of this resource. Also, large scale maps are printed and displayed, increasing the needs for paper, ink, and the electricity needed in the printing process. Every public meeting eliminated through the use of Wikiplanning, reduces the use of printed materials, as well as their production, distribution, and eventual disposal.
How can I help?
Participate in the Wikiplanning projects that are held in your community, and let your community leaders know you value this green effort to minimize the carbon footprint of their planning initiatives.
